Grandma Ostler’s Famous Sauerkraut Cake

Ingredients

Mix together:

  • 1 cup butter
  • cup sugar
  • 2 tsp Vanilla
  • 4 eggs

Add:

  • cups flour
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • cup sauerkraut*
  • ½ tsp red food coloring

Frosting:

  • 5 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp milk
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  • *rinse sauerkraut, then chop fine. Put it in a blender and blend with 1 cup water
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350°.
  • When cake is done. Top with minature marshmallows and toast in oven until light brown
  • Allow to cool.

Frosting

  • Add all ingredients except the chocolate chips to a small sauce pan. Bring to a hard boil for about 30 seconds. Remove from heat and add ¾ cups chocolate chips.
  • Pour over marshmallows and spread evenly

Notes

Nearly every family gathering we attended, Grandma brought this cake. Everyone loved it. She always got a laugh that no one knew it had sauerkraut in it. It is yumy….you gotta try it.
