Grandma Ostler’s Famous Sauerkraut Cake
Ingredients
Mix together:
- 1 cup butter
- 2¾ cup sugar
- 2 tsp Vanilla
- 4 eggs
Add:
- 4½ cups flour
- ½ cup cocoa
- 1 cup water
- 2 tsp soda
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1¾ cup sauerkraut*
- ½ tsp red food coloring
Frosting:
- 5 Tbsp sugar
- 3 Tbsp milk
- 2 Tbsp butter
- ¾ cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- *rinse sauerkraut, then chop fine. Put it in a blender and blend with 1 cup water
- Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350°.
- When cake is done. Top with minature marshmallows and toast in oven until light brown
- Allow to cool.
Frosting
- Add all ingredients except the chocolate chips to a small sauce pan. Bring to a hard boil for about 30 seconds. Remove from heat and add ¾ cups chocolate chips.
- Pour over marshmallows and spread evenly

Nearly every family gathering we attended, Grandma brought this cake. Everyone loved it. She always got a laugh that no one knew it had sauerkraut in it. It is yumy….you gotta try it.
