Course: Main Dishes, Sauces, Dips & Dressings
1st Gen Author: Alane Watkins

Ingredients

  • 5 lbs ground beef
  • 2 -46 oz cans tomato juice
  • 5 tsp salt
  • 3 large onions diced
  • 1/2 cup chili powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 can tomato paste

Instructions

  • Place hamburger, 1 can of juice and salt in a large kettle. Mix together well with your hands (like meatloaf).
  • Cook over medium heat until meat is cooked through.
  • While meat is cooking place onions and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan and cook until almost tender. Do NOT overcook! Set aside, but do not drain the liquid off.
  • Once the hamburger is done, drain the grease it well. Return the hamburger to your kettle.
  • Add in chili powder, pepper and sugar. Stir and mix really well.
  • Add in onion and about 1/2 of the other can of tomato juice and the tomato paste. Keep adding juice until you have the consistency you want.
  • Stir until all is well incorporated.
  • Cook gently until thick enough for your hot dog sauce.
  • It will thicken as it cools.
  • Serve over hot dog with mustard and coleslaw.

Notes

This makes a very large batch…..great for a big party.  It’s like a chili dog without the beans.
