One summer Fred and Alane were riding in the back of the pickup as Dad checked things out on the Block 89 farm. Fred who was most likely 5 or 6 years old was leaned up against the tailgate while Dad was driving down a dirt road. Alane who was leaned up against the cab facing Fred watched as Dad hit a bump and the tailgate flew open. Fred did a summersault out of the back of the truck landing on his feet. He was more worried about being lost and forgotten than any damage from falling out of the pickup. He immediately began screaming and chasing the pickup as hard as he could. Alane began banging on the truck insisting that Dad stop because Fred had fallen out. Both children were relieved when Fred was returned back into the truck. We were most likely only about 200 feet from the house.
