Homemade Garlic Bread

Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 3 Tbsp yeast
  • cup warm water
  • 5-6 cups flour

Instructions

  • Place milk sugar, salt, and butter in small saucepan.
  • Heat over low heat until butter melts and sugar dissolves.
  • Cool to lukewarm.
  • Dissolve yeast in warm water .
  • Add lukewarm milk mixture and 4 ½ c flour.
  • Mix with dough hook for about 1 minute.
  • (or knead by hand adding ½ c flour at a time for 10 -15 min until soft and supple.  Don’t’ add too much flour as this will make a dry bread)
  • If using dough hook, add ½ c flour at a time adding just enough that the dough clings to the hook.
  • Knead for 5 -6 min
  • Place dough in greased bowl, turning to grease top.  Cover and let rise for about 15 min.
  • Divide dough in half and shape into French bread shaped loaves and place on jelly roll pans.
  • With sharp knife slice ½ inch cut down center of each loaf.
  • Melt some butter and pour down the center cut of each loaf.
  • Sprinkle with Johnny’s season salt and Johnny’s garlic salt.
  • Bake @ 350 for 25 min or until golden brown
