Rattlesnake Eggs

One of the summers that Lee came to stay with us he introduced Grandpa to “rattlesnake eggs” which was an envelope with a wire shaped in a large u shape.  A rubber band was strung between the ends with a button strung on the rubber band.  When twisted it remained quiet until someone open the envelope.  As the button was released from its hold it made a rattling sound that would startle and get reactions from people.  Dad loved to use this gimmick to scare people.  One time in Sacrament meeting he handed it to his friend who had been adamant that there was no such thing as rattlesnake eggs (and of course he was right). Dad didn’t think it would scare him—he just wanted him to see how the gimmick worked. When he opened the envelope he let out a warhoop and crawled right over the bench! It disrupted the speaker and the whole whole congregation.
