We always had farm chores as children. None of us remembers a time when we didn’t have a milk cow. We milked a cow morning and evening during our entire childhoods (except maybe Emily). When we moved to Chewelah we not only milked a cow but raised hundreds of dairy calves. We would get up at 4:30 every morning to complete our morning chores in time for Seminary and school. We typically had at least 50 calves every morning and evening to be fed by bottle. Gary fed the yearling calves. Alane, Gary, and Fred were responsible for milking the cow (we took turns). Carol Jean and Janene mixed up the powdered milk and filled the calf bottles. Alane and Fred distributed the bottles and fed the calves.
